About Us
I'm
Melanie Chalk, one of two daughters of Reginald Usher.
The sounds of war had only just stopped reverberating
through the town when Reginald and Phyllis Usher came
to Dover Road in Folkestone. The shop was a florists
but during the war was selling virtually anything that
was available. Gradually it became a shop which sold
only flowers and plants and specialised in seeds.
Sadly, Phyllis died in 1971 and Virginia
and myself joined our father in the business when it
became known as Reginald Usher & Daughters. On my
father's retirement, I took over the shop and now run
it successfully with my husband and experienced staff.
Reg did not live to see the 50 year celebration, he
died in 1994, but he was always proud to see the business
- his dream - blossoming.
The shop delivers over a wide area of
Kent and to the cruise terminal in Dover, and we are
suppliers of flowers to Canterbury Cathedral. Our flowers
are imported directly from Holland and we offer a huge
range of unusual varieties and seasonal flowers throughout
the year. We try to keep pace with new developments
in technology and have become fully computerised and
now we leap into cyberspace with 'Ushers Online'.
In April of 2003 Usher’s moved premises
to 81/83 Cheriton Road, Folkestone. The shop had been
a florist for many years and had recently closed down
but Melanie and her team have re-vamped and re-fitted
it and re-opened as Usher’s the Florist Ltd. The
new premises are light and spacious with separate areas
for order taking and a delightful sitting area for brides
to discuss their wedding flowers at leisure. The newly
expanded business is now ready to move forward with
new designs, new techniques and renewed enthusiasm.
